The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. After celebrating the victory in Las Vegas, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce talked about the game with his brother Jason Kelce on the New Heights podcast.
Both discussed different aspects of the game and the big day but the highlight of their conversation was Travis Kelce’s shock at the 49ers overtime decision during the game.
Travis Kelce left stunned with 49ers OT choice
Travis Kelce, who spent millions to bring Taylor Swift to the game, shared that he was shocked at the San Francisco 49ers overtime decision in the game. This year, there were new overtime rules that guaranteed both teams possession unless the first drive resulted in a defensive score.
According to this rule, whichever team receives second will benefit, as it will know exactly what it needs to score. The San Francisco 49ers won the toss and they got the chance to make the right decision; however, they opted to receive first.
Travis Kelce discussed this situation with his brother and expressed shock at how Kyle Shanahan’s choice gave the Chiefs an overtime advantage.
“You win the coin toss, that’s what you get,” the TE said. “You get the opportunity to have the advantage and they handed it right over to us.”
Travis Kelce shared that when he got to know their decision, he was shocked but at the same time happy because he knew they had made the wrong choice.
Inside the NFL also revealed what the Chiefs were talking about with this decision. Here is what Inside the NFL captured:
“We want the ball,” Kyle Shanahan said.
“They want the ball! They wanted it!” Patrick Mahomes said.
“We want them to have the ball! They wanted it, they can have it!” Travis Kelce added.
As they decided, the San Francisco 49ers received the opening kick-off, which gave them a temporary 22-19 lead. However, later, the Chiefs got the lead and won the game with a 25-22 score.
Kyle Shanahan also received plenty of criticism for his overtime decision, which became one of the main reasons why the team lost.
Travis Kelce addresses “unacceptable” Andy Reid treatment
In the first half of the Super Bowl LVIII game, Travis Kelce bumped into coach Andy Reid and shouted in his face because he was unhappy about being taken off when Isiah Pacheco fumbled the ball eight yards out. This clip went viral and TE received criticism for his behavior towards the coach.
After the game, when Travis was asked about what he was saying to the coach, he joked, “I was just telling him how much I love him.”
However, he recently talked about the situation with his brother and called his behavior “definitely unacceptable.”
“I can’t get that fired up to the point where bumping coach and it’s getting him off balance and stuff. It came in a moment when we weren’t playing very well and I wasn’t playing very well.”
He shared that the coach still didn’t shout at him and he handled the situation calmly.
“It’s definitely unacceptable and I immediately wished I could have taken it back. Coach Reid actually came right up to me after that and didn’t even have harsh words for me.”
Travis’ brother, Jason Kelce, told him straight away that his behavior was way too much and he had “crossed the line.”
“The yelling in his face, too, was over the top. I think there are better ways to handle this, retrospectively.”
Kelce replied that he accepts his mistake but he loves the coach and knows that.
“I’m a passionate guy. I love coach Reid. He knows how much I love to play for him, how much I love to be a product of his coaching career.”
Despite this harsh moment between Andy Reid and Travis Kelce, both appeared normal after winning the game. Reid also told ESPN that Travis Kelce had apologized to him. In the end, they won the big game and went home with the Super Bowl championship title together.
