The biggest challenge for the commentators of any sport is to choose the right words at the right time. During last week’s Monday night football, however, ESPN’s Troy Aikman failed to live up to that challenge.
At the time of the broadcast of the Chiefs-Raiders game on Monday night football, commentator Troy Aikman made a controversial remark while talking about a questionable roughing the passer call led by Chris Jones of the Chiefs defensive line striking Raiders quarterback Derek Carr from behind in the first half.
“My hope is the competition committee looks at this in the next set of meetings and, you know, we take the dresses off.” Aikman uttered these exact words following the rough play. This statement consists “take the dresses off” which has triggered a lot of fans and impactful individuals as the statement itself reflect “misogynism”.
At a stage like the NFL, which millions of people follow every day, using the such phrase is definitely inappropriate. Troy is now potentially on the verge of losing his job following this incident.
It’s not the first “roughing the passer” incident in the NFL in recent days. Just a day before Monday night, another similar incident occurred which involved the Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarret. So, Troy could easily have said something different to avoid using any misogynistic phrase.
Reactions on Twitter Following the Incident
The host of “The Cash-In” Jason page was furious over this statement while calling out ESPN on Twitter.
Did Troy Aikman really just say what I think he said?
Did he really just say that it’s time for the league to”take the dresses off”? The 60’s called, they want their chauvinist back.
Seriously @ESPN… do better than that crap.#MNF

Famous media personalities like Mike Freeman also took on Aikman and expressed their disappointment towards him.
You can make your point without talking about dresses Aikman

A truly awful call, but let’s not overlook Troy Aikman’s sexist comment: “My hope is the competition committee looks at this in the next set of meetings, and we take the dresses off.”

Aikman however, has not made any comment yet following the outburst of the Twitter world. An apology might be on its way from Aikman but the way ESPN is facing criticism for Aikman’s act as the former Quarterback is part of ESPN’s commentator’s panel representing them, they might be forced to take action against Aikman in the coming days.
