According to Dana White, the next opponent for Leon Edwards will be Colby Covington. Edwards, who is also known as ‘Rocky’, had a notable victory over Kamaru Usman in his initial defense of the welterweight title during UFC 286.
As for Covington, who goes by the nickname ‘Chaos’. He was designated as the main event backup fighter for the recent UK UFC pay-per-view event.
This was the first time a UFC pay-per-view show was held in the UK since Michael Bisping fought Dan Henderson in Manchester seven years ago.
Despite having lost twice against Edwards in the past. The contentious American had a prime viewing spot in the front row to witness Edwards win his latest fight.
During the post-fight press conference. UFC president White declared that the next 170lb title challenger would be none other than the controversial fighter.
However, Edwards was quick to express his displeasure with the match-up. He argued that Covington was undeserving of a title shot because he hasn’t fought since defeating Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 over a year ago.
Afterward, Leon stated that he will not agree to sign a contract to fight the previous interim welterweight champion. But White is not willing to compromise on the issue.
Dana White isn’t looking to negotiate
He said at UFC San Antonio: “Colby Covington deserves this shot at the title.
“I don’t blame Leon. Leon just got through Usman twice. Now he’s looking at another wrestler now with a funky style that’s tough to deal with.
“When you become the champ, everybody’s coming after you.
“All the straight killers are coming after you for the next three times a f***ing year. You’re faced with nothing but the baddest dudes in the world in your division.”
“If you look at Usman and what he did. Usman ran through that division twice. Usman’s one of the greatest of all time. Leon just beat him twice. You’re the man, Leon. You’re the guy. And everyone’s coming after you, and it’s going to be Colby next.”
The UFC president is unable to comprehend the commotion caused by Covington’s third opportunity to compete for the undisputed welterweight championship.
