UFC president Dana White ‘hates’ Merab Dvalishvili’s decision to give up his title shot for Aljamain Sterling, hinting at potential firing

UFC has captured significant attention, largely due to the strong disagreement between UFC President Dana White and Merab Dvalishvili. Dvalishvili opted to forego his opportunity to contend for the championship title, favoring his friend and training partner, Aljamain Sterling.

This unexpected choice has triggered intense speculation within the MMA community. Dana White’s public remarks on this matter underscored the gravity of Dvalishvili’s decision. White’s statements implied potential repercussions for Dvalishvili’s career. This includes a potential release from the UFC.

Dana White blasts Merab Dvalishvili and Aljamain Sterling

Merab Dvalishvili and Aljamain Sterling are friends and training partners. They have famously showcased their brotherhood by not fighting each other in the Octagon. Dvalishvili and Sterling are 1 and 2 in the bantamweight rankings. Sterling recently fought at UFC 292 where he lost the title to Sean O’Malley.

Sterling recently clamored for a rematch to which Dvalishvili said that he would wait for Sterling to finish his business with O’Malley. O’Malley, on the other hand, is focusing his attention on Marlon Vera, his presumed opponent in December. Sterling and Dvalishvili not fighting each other is not at terms with the UFC who wants them to fight to determine the next challenger. Henry Cejudo too has openly criticized Sterling and Dvalishvili.

Matt Serra explains why Merab Dvalishvili vs. Aljamain Sterling is "not going to f***ing happen"

Dana White’s statements directed towards Merab Dvalishvili and Aljamain Sterling showcase UFC’s stance on fighting. White said “Why did you even get into this sport?” at the post-fight press conference of the Dana White Contender Series. White has for long believed that UFC is the promotion where the best fight the best. The number 1 and 2 ranked bantamweight not fighting does not go hand-in-hand with that philosophy.

Aljamain Sterling is also pondering a move to featherweight. If something like that happens, then the UFC would be fine with both the contenders. Having two top-ranked contenders fighting each other is not a good look for the promotion.

Merab Dvalishvili willing to give up title shot for Aljamain Sterling

Merab Dvalishvili’s decision to forgo his opportunity at a title shot in favor of Aljamain Sterling has ignited the MMA community. This move carries substantial ramifications for the bantamweight division. Dvalishvili’s choice brought to the forefront friendship, personal strategy, and sportsmanship.

By setting aside his own aspiration of claiming a championship, Dvalishvili showcased his willingness to prioritize other values like friendship and brotherhood. Moreover, this decision prompted contemplation about the relationships existing among athletes in a sport where each individual strives to achieve their personal objectives.

The potential consequences stemming from Dvalishvili’s choice are huge. Dana White has openly criticized the decision. The reception among fellow fighters is mixed. Some are in favor of the two fighters whilst others are very disappointed not to see the grapplers facing each other.

Recovering from a hand injury, Dvalishvili has options at bantamweight. The Georgian is on a nine-fight winning streak and a victory over a fellow ranked bantamweight could easily land him a title shot.
