UNLV QB Matthew Sluka Steps Away, Won’t Play Rest of 2024 Season

As a great quarterback, Matthew Sluka helped lead the Rebels to an undefeated season after transferring from Holy Cross, where he was a three-year starter and two-time Walter Payton Award candidate. But in a surprising announcement, Sluka revealed he won’t play in any more games due to NIL disagreement.

The UNLV Rebels have now lost their starting quarterback for back-to-back seasons. Matthew Sluka stated late Tuesday that he would not be playing this season and will instead take a redshirt year. His abrupt decision astonished and perplexed fans and the collegiate football community.

The note he tweeted on Twitter stated, “I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing any additional games this season. I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled.”

He added, “Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates best of luck this season and hope for the continued success in the program.”
