Victor Wembanyama, the 20-year-old French superstar, has taken the NBA world by storm ever since his arrival and has been hailed as a special talent by 20-time All-Star LeBron James. He was recently matched up against another enigmatic player, the 27-year-old Jalen Brunson, in the game between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks.
Both Jalen Brunson and Victor Wembanyama had one hell of a game, as both the superstars displayed their level-best performances, although only one of them could secure a victory for their team.
Spurs triumph in Victor Wembanyama’s insane performance
The San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knick 130-126 in one of the most closely contested games of the season, as the showdown saw two epic performances from two elite superstars.
Wemby had a major contribution in the Spurs’ victory, as he scored 40 points along with 7 assists, and went 13-for-22 from the field, 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, and 10-for-12 from the free-throw line to surpass his previous career-high by two points. The Rookie of the Year favorite also matched the highest rebound total of his young career with 20 boards.
Jalen Brunson scored 61 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists for the Knicks, but couldn’t get the dub.
Watch: Victor Wembanyama throws away Jalen Brunson’s 61 points ball
The Alien had one of the best night of his career, but might also have performed the pettiest move of the game by throwing the ball into the stands as the final buzzer sounded. This led an outburst against him on social media, as people said that the Knicks guard Jalen Brunson could have wished to get the ball to commemorate his career night.
Of course, there’s no way to know for sure if the 20-year-old forward consciously meant to prevent Brunson from taking the game ball home or if the Knicks point guard even wanted it, given that his team lost.
In addition, it was interesting that Wemby didn’t secure the ball for himself when he also posted a career-best 40 points and got the victory.
However, despite the win, the Spurs still remain at number 15 in the Western Conference, where the playoff race is heating up, and the Knicks still remain the 4th-seeded team in the Eastern Conference, and are likely to make it to the playoffs.
