AS Roma’s Belgian international striker, Romelu Lukaku, paid a heartwarming tribute to his fellow Belgian star and former captain, Eden Hazard, who recently announced his retirement from club football on Tuesday after retiring from the Belgian national team last year.
Hazard has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid in June following the termination of his contract. Romelu Lukaku, Hazard’s friend and national teammate from Belgium, posted a heartfelt video congratulating Hazard on his illustrious career and bidding him farewell as the former Chelsea star embarks on the next chapter of his life.
Romelu Lukaku gives props to Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard, one of the most gifted footballers of this generation, said goodbye to his professional career and wrote down an emotional note while declaring his retirement. Following his announcement, Hazard received tribute from fans all around the world for his career achievements.
One of them that stands out is Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian forward shared a heartwarming video of him congratulating his former captain and Chelsea icon and wishing him and his family all the luck.
Lukaku said: “Here we are, Eden. We heard the news this morning. I want to thank you as a teammate. For many years, we grew up together on the national team and I played with your brother in the youth team. It was a pleasure to have played with you; during all these years, you have given us many moments of joy, many goals, and assists.”
“For me, you are part of the history of Belgian and world football, you gave happiness to many people and you were a role model, from day one to the end. An example of how to be a friend and a professional at the same time.” the striker added in the clip.
Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku’s friendship
The Belgian duo are close friends, sharing a deep bond and getting along with each other very well. Both Hazard and Lukaku have spoken highly of each other in the past. They played together in the Belgian youth team and continue to be teammates in the senior team.
“On the pitch, in terms of pure talent, I have frankly rarely seen a player like Eden. In training, he did things. When he wanted, he showed you that he was the boss, and he told you to your face,” said Lukaku about Eden Hazard on one occasion.
The duo was included in the Belgium squad in last year’s World Cup squad in Qatar, Eden hazard was captaining his side, while Romelu was leading the attack as a primary striker. This was the last time they shared the pitch together.
