The super fight between Lightweight Champion and Pound-for-Pound Number 2 fighter Islam Makhachev and Featherweight Champion and Pound-for-Pound Number 1 fighter Alexander Volkanovski is pretty much one sleep away.
As per the final update, most fighters in the UFC 284 card including the main and co-main events have made their weight with only two individuals missing.
First on the scale was Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski who is currently moving up from the 145lbs division. While many were worried if the fighter would be at his most comfortable moving up, the fighter seemed to be in surprisingly high spirits. He didn’t move up to the whole limit and came in at 154.5 lbs.
Earlier in his life, Volk used to be a rugby player and has at some point weighed in at around 200 pounds. That of course in no way qualifies him to be a good candidate for the Light-heavyweight division which has a limit of 205lbs. Lightweight on the other hand is significantly manageable.
During a UFC-embedded Vlog episode, Alex is seen throwing a party for many of his peers and teammates including Middleweight title challenger Israel Adesanya who is scheduled to fight again for the middleweight title. The former rugby player claimed he couldn’t eat it all which could indicate a good diet discipline.
Why is there so much noise about Islam Makhachev making weight?
Makhachev has been letting a lot of his plans known leading up to this fight which includes knocking out Volkanovski who is touted as the better striker. In an interview he claimed, “Honestly, I want to knock him out. Everybody says Islam is a grappler or wrestler. But I want to show people my striking. He’s a short guy, and I really believe I can knock him out.”
So naturally, some skeptics were waiting to see if he misses the weight but proving the doubters wrong, the AKA prospect has made the weight landing at exactly 155 lbs.
