Following a poor run at the Bristol Motor Speedway, William Byron soon took off to a great start at the Circuit of the Americas, grabbing the pole positions in all the pre-race events. The North Carolinian took this hot form into the final race and clinched away another pole position for Hendrick Motorsports.
Byron did not shy away from celebrating and delivered another ‘pining-hot’ action with his Chevy Camaro to mark his triumph at the COTA track.
Video: William Byron burns Chevrolet Camaro’s tires to celebrate
William Byron is in his seventh season with Hedrick Motorsports, driving the team’s No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the NASCAR Cup Series. During this ‘seven-and-counting’ years, he has clinched over 12 race victories in the team’s Cup Series endeavors and celebrated each win with ‘rubber-melting’ burnouts after the races.
Fast forward to yesterday, William Byron again became the ‘pole-sitter’ for Hendricks MS in the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas—earning his second race victory of the 2024 Cup Series.
As he crossed the checkered flag, he was seen driving the Hendrick’s No. 24 Chevy onto the red pavement beside his team’s stands, where he gently nudged the car against the sidewalls.
From there, much to everyone’s expectations, he began to perform a burnout in his typical, bold ‘Byron’ style—until the rear tires of his Chevrolet Camaro ran flat and melted rubber was spat onto the ground.
Following that fiery display, the official ‘NASCAR at COTA’ page posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) capturing a fire burning over the melted tires. The video also showed the track covered in hot-melted rubber from the burnout, while Byron was seen celebrating with his teammates.
These ‘red-hot’ fiery celebrations from Byron came just before he was seen reflecting on his win at the Circuit of the Americas.
William Byron reflects on NASCAR Cup win
William Byron, who started the race from the 1st spot of the grid, delivered a dominant drive to grab his second P1 of the season in the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at the COTA track. This ‘pole-sitter’ led 42 out of the 68 laps, before crossing the chequered flag at full throttle, following a ‘hard-earned’ last lap drama with JGR’s Christopher Bell.
In a post-race video, Byron was seen expressing his excitement over his win, as he said, “Winners here at COTA. Just so pumped for this ’24 team.”
He also heartily thanked the whole Hendrick’s team, especially for their teamwork and technical support. “Everyone did such a good job this weekend- from start to finish. And got better at practice,” he said. “Just really proud and this support is really tough to win. So, proud of this one.”
In another post-race interview, he reflected on his last lap struggles with Christopher Bell, who cut off nearly three seconds from Byron’s lead and gave a hard charging run till the end. “I was trying to not make mistakes. I knew that last lap he was going to be pushing hard. Everyone is too good, and that car (was) too close.”
At the race’s end, the North Carolinian ran away with a grand total of 47 points, and now sits in the 6th spot of the 2024 Driver’s Standings in the Cup Series.
William Byron will next pilot HMS’ No. 24 Camaro at the Richmond Raceway on April 1st for the Toyota Owners 400 race in the Cup Series.
