In the aftermath of the successful NFL Draft 2023, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl has come out with a bold prediction for the upcoming season.
Former Philly vice president of player personnel Weidl left the organization after six seasons to land in Pittsburgh. He was initially hired by the Eagles in 2016 as an assistant director of player personnel, however, he got promoted to the director of player personnel in 2019 and was a big part of the team’s successful drafts in the last two years.
Steelers assistant GM Andy Weidl is feeling confident following a successful draft
Pittsburg’s Assistant GM Andy Weidl opened up to the media at a news conference to shed light on his role in last weekend’s draft on Friday inside the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and cited his optimism regarding the team’s future.
“We’re going to be big, we’re going to be physical, we’re going to be tough, we’re going to impose our will on teams,” he said.
Weidl didn’t just brag about doing something massive without doing anything, instead, he and his team made some bold moves this offseason by rebuilding both sides of the line of scrimmage, with an extra look to the big guys.
On offense, Pittsburgh added offensive tackle Broderick Jones, tight end Darnell Washington, guard Isaac Seumalo, and guard Nate Herbig this offseason. On defense, the franchise re-signed defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, and drafted tackle Keeanu Benton, cornerback Joey Porter Jr, and cornerback Cory Trice. These offensive and defensive fronts can do something incredible in 2023 due to the level of physicality.
The Steelers have a storied history of success in the NFL, having won six Super Bowl championships, and Andy reminisced about the old Pittsburgh with a hope to bounce back in the league.
“That’s the Pittsburgh Steelers, right? You go break the other team’s sword in the second half of a game. To be able to win on the road. That’s what we’re building. That’s what we have here. That’s what they’ve been in the past, and we want to continue that identity”, he added.
It remains to be seen if the Steelers can back up Weidl’s strong words with their play on the field. However, the team’s fans will undoubtedly be thrilled with the confidence and ambition shown by their Assistant GM.
