Chelsea FC has lost a number of experienced players since the start of the current summer transfer window, thus they are keen to add brilliant and prolific stars to form a solid group for the ongoing Premier League and Champions League tournaments.
Only Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella have joined the Blues as of today, but some confirm reporters are suggesting that Thomas Tuchel is keen on signing Wesley Fofana from Leicester City in a long term contract contract.
Why did Chelsea FC sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester City?
Upon the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel advised the club’s management that his side would trail behind other Premier League clubs in defense, and that he needed to add a few defenders to compensate.
Former Premier League champion Leicester City could not move from their £80 million asking price for Wesley Fofana as Chelsea pursued the French defender, and the Blues also determined that if the Fofana trade did not work out, they may turn their interest to other targets.
However, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted that Wesley Fofana’s £70 million move to Chelsea might be completed this weekend, with the Leicester manager acknowledging that the persistent rumours has made the season tough.
Chelsea achieved a breakthrough in their long-running pursuit of the Leicester defender on Friday, agreeing to a deal worth roughly £70 million, after three previous bids were rejected. Chelsea and Fofana have already agreed on a six-year contract earning around £200,000 per week.
The transfer market is open until Thursday, when Leicester hosts Manchester United and therefore Rogers said, “It’s the same with any player. For me if they decide they want to move and see their future elsewhere it is better to have it done as quickly as you possibly can. You have to prepare a team and a group of players and you have to maybe replace that player. Every coach will tell you the same. It doesn’t benefit anyone if it drags on. So we will see what happens over the weekend.”
According to famous soccer journalist Fabrizio Romano, “Wesley Fofana to Chelsea, here we go! Documents are almost ready as Leicester and Chelsea reached an agreement on the fee on Friday, confirmed. Fofana will sign until June 2028 as new Chelsea player. Fee around £75m [add-ons included]. Time to prepare documents now.”

Thomas Tuchel has always praised Fofana, who has made 52 appearances for Leicester City in his two years at the King Power Stadium, as well as five caps for France under-21s and is expected to be named to France’s World Cup squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year.
