WWE is a very famous sports organization that is beloved all across the globe with many famous wrestling superstars on their roster. Among all these superstars, many stars have personal relationships or friendships with each other outside of WWE. But very few superstars have a rivalry with each other even though they face off in the ring against each other.
Some of these superstars have feuds even outside the ring. Among those are The Rock and John Cena. These famous WWE wrestlers have a very bitter rivalry with each other.
What happened between John Cena and The Rock? Explained
From 2011 to 2013, WWE was dominated by The Rock VS John Cena program. This rivalry is one of the most profitable rivalries in the history of WWE. In terms of the financial gain of WWE, The Rock, and John Cena have sold over 3 million PPVs buys. WrestleMania 27, WrestleMania 28, and WrestleMania 29 were sold mostly due to this rivalry.
It all started when John Cena Showed up for an interview on a radio station in 2008. He was asked about his opinion of The Rock. While answering that question, John took a dig at The Rock and said that The Rock did professional wrestling so that he can have a swift acting career in Hollywood. He was thinking about why The Rock did not have time to attend Smackdown anniversary or WrestleMania at that time. He also added that he was angered on a personal level by the statement of The Rock that he loved WWE. After this interview, John Cena was slandered for criticizing The Rock.
In 2008, The Rock attended the Hall of Fame ceremony. Soon after the program, rumors began to spread that a heated conversation took place between Cena and Rock backstage. Though this rumor was false. But many fans also thought a fight had happened in the backstage.
During one particular promo for WrestleMania, John did something which was not in the script there was discomfort visible in the face of The Rock and he got irritated backstage.
According to The Rock, he and Cena were close to exchanging blows backstage during the WrestleMania season. The Rock was not very happy by receiving unscripted punches from John Cena during a match. Whereas, Cena was unhappy because he had to lose to his rival in that match. He felt dissatisfied because he was working very hard to lose to someone who just showed up during major events. After all this feud, the event was great and both Superstars shared a hug in the backstage.
John Cena regrets feuding with Dwayne Johnson
John Cena and The Rock have been on the stage in WWE for several years and both have been active in Hollywood for many years. Both are part of several big movie projects. But there was a time when the duo had a big rivalry.
In a recent Notsam Wrestling Podcast Cena was asked about that rivalry and his reply was surprising for many WWE fans. He said that he and Rock were supposed to give a good fight to the audience and they were supposed to collaborate with each other. But Cena did it the wrong way as he was feeling insecure about The Rock, cause he was solely focused on WWE at that time, and, The Rock was a Hollywood actor at that time. So, Cena wanted to have an equal impact as The Rock had in WWE to put up a good show. It eventually resulted in that great rivalry that we saw on WrestleMania.
However, John Cena admitted that he was wrong and apologized to Rock and his mother. John Cena and The Rock are on good terms now.
