Many exciting NXT special events were announced on last night’s WWE NXT. Fans have been waiting for the two sectors to show off their extraordinary abilities since the declaration of Tuesday Night War. However, regardless of the ratings yet to be released, the WWE segment was interesting when Cody Rhodes appeared in the NXT ring and announced some big upcoming news to entertain the crowd.
On NXT, the American Nightmare announced the upcoming breakout tournaments. But the news that got more attention was the announcement of the return of the Dusty Tag-Team Classic, which had not taken place since 2022.
What is Dusty Tag-Team classic?
The NXT division of WWE hosts an annual competition called the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. It all started in 2015 to honor wrestling Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes. It was modeled after Jim Crockett Promotions’ Crockett Cup tournaments of the ’80s. Dusty Rhodes had a significant impact on those events.
To honor the legend, a 16-team, single-elimination competition was held in 2017. Raw and SmackDown aired the bouts throughout October, culminating at Survivor Series. In addition to a tag team championship bout at the following pay-per-view, the victors get a trophy modeled like Dusty Rhodes’ wrestling boots.
NXT newcomer Cody Rhodes, who clearly has a lot of love for his late father Dusty Rhodes, has announced the revival of the tournament that bears his late father’s name. In addition to hosting tonight’s episode of NXT, the American Nightmare will also be filling the role of guest General Manager. Dates for the tournaments will be revealed soon.
Who won the last Dusty Tag-Team classic matchup?
The new undisputed Tag Team Champion made three major announcements at the start of WWE NXT on October 10. He announced the return of the Dusty Tag-Team Classic Tournament, which is credited with spawning teams like DIY and MSK. There was no mention of whether the tournament—men’s or women’s—would be restarting first.
On NXT Vengeance Day (February 14), 2022, MSK and The Creed Brothers competed in the men’s finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. On March 22, IYO SKY and Alba Fyre played against Wendy Choo and Dakota Kai in the Women’s Dusty Cup.
The 2022 Women’s Dusty Cup champions, IYO SKY and Alba Fyre dropped out of the tag team championship battle at Stand & Deliver in favor of the NXT Women’s Championship event. Brutus and Julius Creed initially earned a title shot against Imperium but got replaced by MSK due to an injury.
