Charlotte Hornets Kai Jones has been at the center of controversy over the last few weeks. His bizarre activities across social media platforms have attracted the attention of the entire NBA community, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
Jones’ peculiar tweets and Instagram videos have been making rounds all over the internet and many fans believe he had been acting after under the influence of narcotics, or even might be mentally compromised. Now it seems that the Hornets star has crossed a certain line with his bizarre behavior and might have to face severe penalty for doing so.
Kai Jones hands in trade request
Kai Jones has posted a shocking tweet on his X account stating that he had officially requested to be traded from Charlotte Hornets. Just an hour later he tweeted again saying, “Done talking to people that cloud my heart I was goat from start.”
Last week the Hornets released a statement regarding Kai’s absence saying that he was away from the team indefinitely due to “personal reasons”. The NBA refused to reveal anything further. Although many are making fun of Kai’s delusional tweets, there are a few who are actually concerned about his health. One of the people who shared their concern is fellow NBA player Terrence Ross.
It’s unclear whether Ross was actually concerned about Jones or trying to make fun of him just like others. They had an exchange on Instagram and Ross ended up with the last laugh.
“Is he all there, mentally?”, Ross asked. “I’m the greatest of all time check my highlights,” Jones replied to which Ross said, “So no.”
Although many found Ross’ comment funny, it was a rather insensitive one given the fact that Kai Jones might be suffering from some mental condition. Jones has not yet replied to the comments. Jones also criticized his teammates Mark Williams and Nick Richards, and said he was better than LaMelo Ball and No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller. The Charlotte Hornets have declined to comment on the situation.
Potential punishment for Kai Jones
Kai Jones can be subjected to a fine or suspension for publicly requesting a trade based on the current collective bargaining agreement, which states, “Any player (or, for clarity, any player representative or person acting with authority on behalf of a player) who publicly expresses a desire to be traded to another Team shall be subject to a fine and/or a suspension.”
The maximum fine that may be imposed by the NBA on a player pursuant to the foregoing shall be $150,000. Jones, if found guilty of making such comments without any legitimate explanation to fend for himself, might have to pay a hefty fine to make up for his unprofessional behavior in regard to the trade statement.
