Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most accomplished soccer players on the planet. There have been many games in his career where he came out of the clutch and snapped a victory from the fingertips of his opponent. Such a game was the 2010/11 Copa del Rey final.
The final game was a hotly anticipated El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona, where many stars were present, both on the pitch and in the gallery. One such presence was Barcelona defender Gerrard Pique’s pop star ex-girlfriend, Shakira.
During that game, Shakira denigrated the five times Ballon d’Or winner for a blunder, but ultimately, Cristiano Ronaldo had the last laugh that night.
Why did Shakira mock Cristiano Ronaldo?
Cristiano Ronaldo won a plethora of trophies during his time with Los Blancos. These include two La Liga titles, four Champions League titles, and two Copa Del Reys. The 38-year-old has spent his entire career relentlessly pursuing success and victory, so Shakira might have been better off not adding fuel to the fire during the heated 2011 El Clasico final.
Ronaldo missed a game-winning opportunity in overtime, and Shakira made fun of him for it. After Ronaldo’s major gaffe, the big screen showed her laughing with the crowd. But Ronaldo had the final say, ending Real’s 18-year drought in the competition with a winning goal off a cross from Angel di Maria with a powerful header.
Shakira and Gerrard Pique parted ways
The Colombian Popstar had met Gerrard Pique during the shooting of the 2010 World Cup theme song “Waka Waka.” After the meeting, they developed a romantic relationship, and their relationship became public knowledge in early 2011. The two are the parents of their sons, Milan and Sasha.
Despite being together for 12 years, the duo never got married. They announced their separation officially on June 4, 2022, via Reuters: “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the wellbeing of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy,” the statement said.
The real reason behind the separation is thought to be the former Barcelona defender allegedly cheating on Shakira. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer commemorates this event as the “darkest period of her life.”
Gerrard Pique retired from professional soccer during the World Cup season break in 2022.
Shakira is enjoying her post-breakup life in Miami. There are speculations that she and seven times Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton are dating; however, nothing has been confirmed yet.
