The Major League Soccer season has already been concluded for Inter Miami after they failed to advance to the playoff round, finishing the season at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table in 14th place.
Miami head coach Tata Martino has started early preparations for the next season, which kicks off in February next year, beginning with the upcoming preparatory China tour in November. The club recently bid farewell to a few players while is expected to welcome back loanee Leandro González Pírez.
Who is Leandro González Pírez?
Leandro González Pírez, is a 31-year-old Argentine international defender currently playing club football in the Argentine top division league with River Plate on loan from Inter Miami until December 2023. The defender returned to his boyhood club on loan with an option to buy permanently in 2022.
González Pírez has spent a major part of his club football career in South America playing for some of the top Argentine clubs. He then joined the MLS club Atlanta in 2017 before moving to the Mexican club Tijuana on short-term and returned to US to sign for Inter Miami in its inaugural season in 2020.
The Argentine center-back made 46 appearances for the Miami club in his two seasons and then returned to his native Buenos Aires on loan to play for his boyhood club, River Plate, where he began his career in 2011. During his time there, he made 35 appearances with the first team.
Pírez represented Argentina’s U20 team but has yet to earn a senior national cap for the country. He also played under the current Miami head coach, Tata Gerardo Martino, at Atlanta United during the seasons from 2017 to 2018, making 39 appearances in all competitions.
Leandro González Pírez set to join Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in 2024
After a disappointing season, Inter Miami is focusing on squad reinforcement and has begun making monumental changes to prepare for the next MLS season in 2024 during the off-season. The club secured only 9 wins and suffered 18 losses in their total of 34 league games, leaving no chance for progression to the next round.
Leandro González Pírez, the 31-year-old center-back, is set to return to his MLS side after completing his loan spell at River Plate. He will join forces with Argentine World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi and his former head coach Tata Martino in January.
