Italian giants Juventus have been struggling in the past few seasons, mainly due to off-field issues and problems. Last season, they finished in 7th place in the Serie A league table following a 10-point deduction imposed by the Italian Football Federation due to financial manipulation.
The club continues to face mounting problems this season. Their French star midfielder, Pogba, is under investigation for doping; meanwhile, another midfielder’s name has been dragged into a gambling case.
Why is Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli getting banned?
The 22-year-old Italian midfielder, Nicolo Fagioli, plays for Juventus FC and has played for Italy’s national team as well. Fagioli is Old Lady’s youth product, who rose through the ranks of the Juventus youth team to break into the main squad last season.
The midfielder has featured in a total of six league games for Juventus and provided a single assist this season; however, it is not his performance that is making headlines lately; rather, the Italian is currently under investigation for illegal betting allegations, as it is suspected that the player has placed bets on illegal sites with several different identities.
It is reported that a Juventus player is involved in illegal online betting and could potentially face a three-year suspension from playing football in addition to a fine of 25,000 euros, in case the allegations are proven against him and other unnamed suspects. The Italian Federation Sports Justice Code prohibits professional players from betting on football.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) revealed they are investigating Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli over possible betting allegations. Moreover, reports have emerged, that the Turin prosecutor’s office had also opened an investigation into the player.
Update on Paul Pogba’s situation
Meanwhile, another Juventus midfielder, the 2018 World Cup winner with France, Paul Pogba, tested positive in a doping test. The sample revealed an exceptionally high level of testosterone after a Serie A game against Udinese in August. As a result, Pogba was handed a suspension until September.
However, the Frenchman requested a retest of the sample, suspecting a mistake. Unfortunately, the second test also returned positive, confirming the initial result. As a consequence, he might face a four-year ban, and despite this, Juventus will still be obligated to pay a portion of his substantial wage, estimated at around €8-10 million.
