Garrett Wilson, the infamous WR of New York Jets has decided to make a ‘special’ change to his jersey number for the upcoming 2024 NFL season. The number change holds a sentimental value for the WR as he is going back to the number that he used to play with back in Ohio State.
Garrett Wilson has previously indicated this number change back in April when he said that this would be his last year playing with number 17.
Why Garrett Wilson changed his 2024 NFL jersey number?
Garrett Wilson has been playing with jersey number 17 in New York Jets for the past 2 years, but he has always wished to have Jersey number 5, which he wore while playing for Ohio State.
It seems to be a number that has a nostalgic value attached to the player, which brought him fortune in his college playoffs and might even do the same for the upcoming seasons as he plays for New York Jets.
The transition was possible as veteran punter Thomas Morstead graciously passed down his number 5 to Garrett Wilson. He posted a tweet saying, “Honored to pass #5 to GW”
With two back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his NFL career, Wilson’s jersey number change might mean a big personal and meaningful shift for the talented WR. Since Garrett Wilson will wear jersey number 5, the number 17 is now available.
Although, this change seems to be driven by very personal reasons by Wilson, it has unintentionally led to a few discussions on the internet, which insinuate the number 17 might be given to Davante Adams.
Garrett Wilson’s jersey number change fuels rumors
After the change in jersey number of Garrett Wilson was announced by Thomas Morstead, fans on X started discussing on the possibility of Davante Adams playing for New York Jets from the upcoming season.
Fans were of the opinion that this jersey number change could be a move to free up the jersey number 17, the one with which Davante Adams plays. The opinion was still fueled by the fact that Davante Adams himself liked the tweet of Thomas Morstead passing down the number 5 to Garrett Wilson and eventually making 17 available.
Liking a tweet might not be big evidence to support the possibility of Davante Adams playing for New York Jets, but it is true, the Jets would have two good receivers. With other rumors suggesting the return of Aaron Rodgers from his Achilles injury, the Jets looks very strong on paper for the next season with such great player playing together.
