After the mixed bag of emotions last season, Manchester United are looking to make moves in the early parts of the transfer window. Erik Ten Hag exceeded most analysts’ expectations and led the team to a third-place finish in the Premier League and won the EFL Cup. The rumours of Mason Mount being the first signing of the season for the Red Devils have started to heat up.
The Dutchman is looking to strengthen his squad in numerous positions but not more so than in midfield and in attack. Many reports suggest Mason Mount being Ten Hag and Manchester United’s priority mid-field signing. With two bids being rejected by Chelsea, will the third bid prove to be the final one?
Should Chelsea sell Mason Mount?
After a season of underperformance and heartbreaks, Chelsea is looking to rebuild under the Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino. If the Mason Mount deal goes through, he will join a list of players to depart Stanford Bridge which includes the likes of Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and N’Golo Kante.
Reports were suggesting that Pochettino was optimistic on the English midfielder’s future at Stanford Bridge but it appears that Mason Mount has already made up his mind to join the Red Devils. Mason Mount had a disappointing season where he played in a total of 35 matches and scored only three times.
Chelsea has sights on Brighton’s defensive midfielder Moisés Caicedo and has also made signings to strengthen their attack by bringing in Christopher Nkunku.
How will Mount fit into Erik Ten Hag’s system?
Erik Ten Hag is set to rejuvenate his midfield options with Fred, Scott Mctominay and Donny Van De Beek’s departure on the cards. At the closing stages of the last transfer window, Manchester United bought Casemiro for $88 million after their failed pursuit of Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong. With the lack of depth in the midfield department, the Dutchman believes Mason Mount will fit his system like a glove.
The English midfielder came into the limelight during the 21/21 Premier League season where he scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists. Even after a brief hiatus, Mason Mount is looking to be exactly what Manchester United needs. With goals coming at a premium for Ten Hag’s team, he will expect Mason Mount to be the key to that problem.
Talking about Mount’s work rate his former manager Thomas Tuchel said “It is very hard to drop him because even if he has a not-so-good game, you’ll always get full energy and positivity and a wonderful approach.”
The poker games between the clubs continue as we approach the halfway stage of the transfer window. It has always been reported that Chelsea is looking for a fee close to £60 million and with Manchester United’s two previous bids getting rejected, it is going to be interesting to see if this bid satisfies Chelsea’s needs or if United need to go a tad bit higher.
