Liverpool, who had struggled to be consistent last season, seem to have shrugged off those issues as they are back to their marauding best this season. Currently sitting at the top of the Premier League, Liverpool have scored 51 points from a possible 66, losing only once this season.
Having beat Chelsea 4-1, Liverpool face Arsenal in a top-of-the table clash next. Mikel Arteta’s side are potential title challengers this time around, and a win against Liverpool would help them close the gap to Liverpool to 2 points.
Darwin Nunez’s injury cast doubt on his participation in Arsenal match
There are concerns over Liverpool’s attack as star forward Darwin Nunez suffers from a foot injury, potentially sidelining him for the crucial clash against Arsenal this Sunday. The Gunners, eager to close the gap on the league leaders, see an opportunity arise, while Jurgen Klopp’s men sweat over the availability of their dynamic Uruguayan. An X-ray offered some relief, revealing no fractures, but swelling remains a concern.
A big reason why Liverpool are playing so well has to do with the fact that Darwin Nunez has improved a lot from what was seen in his debut. Darwin Nunez struggled in his first season with Liverpool as he constantly trolled for his inability to score from clear-cut chances, and although that issue somehow persists, he has improved a lot this season.
The Uruguayan already has 21 goal contributions—10 goals and 11 assists this season—and has formed a good partnership with Mohamed Salah, who himself is unavailable with a hamstring injury that he picked up with Egypt in the AFCON.
Nunez, who assisted once in the 4-1 victory over Chelsea, set an unwanted record in the game as well, as he became the first player in Premier League history to hit the post 4 times in a single game. He also picked up a foot injury, which might see him miss out on the clash with Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp comments on Darwin Nunez’s injury
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that his No. 9 will undergo further tests to assess the severity of the foot injury sustained by Nunez in Liverpool’s 4-1 routing of Chelsea.
During his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, Klopp said, “I don’t know if Darwin is available or not because after 20 minutes somebody stepped on his foot and it was very painful after the game.
“He only took his boot off after the game because he didn’t want to see it before, he knew there was something. So, he left the stadium in a boot, and it was not a football boot. So, nothing broke, X-ray clear, but [it is] swollen and we have to see if he can get his foot back into a boot or not because we all know that takes time. I did not see him this morning so we have to wait a little bit.”, Klopp further added.
