The January 17th episode of WWE SmackDown took place at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California—Rey Mysterio’s hometown. Rey Kicked off the show by welcoming the excited hometown crowd. To make it even more special, he announced that he would be entering the 30-man Royal Rumble match.
The announcement that 50-year-old Rey Mysterio will compete in the Royal Rumble fight thrilled the audience in his hometown. He talked about his amazing win in 2006, when he came in at number two and beat everyone.
The 619 master then went on to be the main event at WrestleMania 22 and win his first World Heavyweight Championship. According to Mysterio, he did it in honor of his late buddy, Eddie Guerrero, back then.

With superstars like Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, John Cena, and Seth Rollins already in the ring, Rey knew it wouldn’t be easy to win in 2025. However, he showed complete determination to give his maximum in the rumble match.
Before he could say anything else, Kevin Owens cut him off and challenged Mysterio to a fight that night.
Kevin Owens attempts forbidden piledriver on Rey Mysterio
On this week’s SmackDown, Owens and Mysterio clashed in a thrilling match that quickly became unforgettable. Both gave it their all, showcasing their incredible skills.
However, things took a dangerous turn when Owens tried to hit the 50-year-old with the banned Package Piledriver—a move prohibited in WWE because of its high risk of injury.Â
Despite warnings from officials, Owens has been using the move since his feud with Cody Rhodes, pushing the limits every time.

Just as Owens was about to execute the move, Cody Rhodes stormed in to stop him. Otherwise, things could go differently for the Hall of Famer.
